Quality vs. Quantity
Ever notice how easy it is to measure life based on Quantity? While I know I've had a lot more time to be still or quiet - things are bubbling up to the surface for me. A lot has to do with the amount I actually get done in a day.
I reframed on this many times when we first started our quarantine times - thank goodness we are passed that!
When we measure our life based on quantity, a few things come up for me.
We measure our professional success in hours worked.
We evaluate relationships on how much time we’ve spent together.
We judge our physical fitness in miles hitting the pavement, pounds lifted in the gym or our worth in weight on the scale...
But when we measure life in Quantities, we turn a blind eye to Quality.
You might spend 10 hours working one day. But how intense was your focus? And how prioritized were your efforts?
You can spend an entire day with someone. But how present were you? How deep is the connection truly?
You could work out for an hour a day, go for runs, or lift weights. How was your posture and form when performing the movements? How engaged was your mind with your body while training? Mind over muscle, anyone?
Focus your mind to transform your body.
Food is an example in which quality trumps quantity. Eating a small amount of high quality, nutritious food is always better than eating small or large amounts of low-quality food.
So when we're in the first path of Resistance, we tend to SUFFER a lot. We experience things on a subconscious level like "Why me?!?"
I've always connected to QUALITY being the best business plan. To me, this speaks success and integrity. So does the quality of our thoughts and patterns we do each day when we choose to show up for ourselves.
So, how do you Choose Quality Over Quantity?
The way to choose quality over quantity is to raise your standards within ALL areas of your life. We have to really value ourselves if we want to choose the highest quality people, things, habits, mindsets, so on and so forth.
When we don't choose to value ourselves, then we will constantly find ourselves in a place that lacks meaning and depth.
I invite you over the next week to decide to choose quality over quantity. For example, if you have a choice between an apple or chips and ice cream, then choose the apple. As you continue to do this over time, you will begin to feel the momentum of choosing quality over quantity. If a negative thought arises, choose in that moment to live through the good as opposed to the negative. Each time you choose this path, you build the muscle to work FOR you in a positive way each time.
In times like now, when we’re exercising, let’s do what’s needed to fuel our highest-Quality energy.
Training for life, but not too much. Bringing mindfulness to our posture and how and who we are being when we are moving. Getting movement in through the course of every day.
An activity for you if like this sort of thing is to track your steps. We can even do this together! At the end of the day, send me your stats. I'm a huge fan of measuring things. My clients experience this every week with me, by simply measuring some aspect of their lives (e.g. number of steps you take each day, the food you eat, the thoughts you think that do not serve you.) This will naturally in a curated way improve your performance on things during the day.
We don’t want to stop measuring things.
I've included a fun, quick at home circuit workout for you that can help you get your QUALITY movement in. If there is something that doesn't feel right, modify the exercise, but have fun! Please always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.
At the end of the day, the question remains... what matters to you?
What does it look and feel like to truly live a life of Quality instead of a life of Quantity?
Since we have a prime opportunity to focus on our health and wellness, I invite you to give this a try.
