Having a tidy living space not only makes it easier to find things, but it can also improve your mental wellbeing, reduce stress, and create a sense of calm. The Marie Kondo Method, also known as the KonMari Method, is a simple yet powerful decluttering technique that focuses on keeping only those things that “spark joy.” This method involves going through everything you own, one category at a time, and asking yourself whether each piece brings you joy or not. If it doesn’t bring joy, then it’s time to let it go. Sounds easy, right? Here are the 5 Konmari Categories and steps you need to follow to declutter your home and closet:

Clothing – this includes jackets, shoes, bags and accessories
Books
Paper
Kimono (basically everything else)
Sentimental
Start with clothes: Start by going through every piece of clothing you own, from socks to coats, and decide whether each piece brings you joy or not. If it doesn’t, then donate it or toss it. Hang what’s left in your closet in a way that makes you happy and organize them by category, such as shirts, pants, dresses, etc.
Tackling clutter in your home and closet can be overwhelming, so starting with a plan is essential. Create a list of what you want to accomplish, and break down the process into manageable chunks. Start with one room, one drawer, or one closet at a time. Remember that decluttering is a process, and it's okay to take your time. Be realistic about your expectations and set achievable goals.
The One In, One Out Rule:
To avoid accumulating more clutter, following the one in, one out rule is crucial. This means that for every new item you bring into your home or closet, you get rid of something you no longer need. It's a simple rule that can be easy to follow once you get into the habit. This will help you maintain a clutter-free space and keep you accountable for your consumption.
Donate, Sell, or Recycle Unwanted Items:
Once you have identified items that you want to dispose of, decide whether you want to donate, sell or recycle them. Donating to a local charity or a thrift store not only declutters your space but also helps someone else in need. Another option is to sell your unused items like eBay or Poshmark or host a garage sale. Recycling is another way to dispose of items that are no longer needed, ultimately helping the environment.
Closet Clean-Out:
Decluttering your closet can be a challenging task. Start by sorting your clothes into three piles – keep, donate/sell, and toss. Organize the remaining clothes in a way that makes sense to you, such as by color, season, or type. Be honest with yourself about what you wear or no longer need. The goal is to keep only what you love and wear regularly. Use storage solutions like hooks, shelves baskets, or closet organizers to maximize your closet space.
Let Go of Sentimental Items:
Often, we hold on to items that have sentimental value, even though they are no longer useful or needed. It's essential to let go of these items and not let them hold us back. The memories associated with these items can stay with us forever, and we don't need the physical object to keep them alive. Keep only what's necessary and meaningful, and let go of the rest.
Next, Tackle Books:
Go through all the books you own and decide which ones you want to keep and which ones you want to donate or give away. Keep only the books that you truly love, and let go of those that you’ve been holding onto for sentimental reasons or because you think you should read someday.
Declutter Your Papers:
Go through all your paperwork, including bills, receipts, and documents, and only keep the ones that you need. Organize them in a way that works best for you.

In this category, you should go through all your miscellaneous items, such as kitchenware, decor, and electronics. Ask yourself, “does this spark joy?” If the answer is no, then let it go.
Lastly, Focus on Sentimental Items:
Sentimental items can be the hardest to sort through, but they’re also the most important. Go through items such as old photos, letters, and keepsakes, and only keep the items that truly bring you joy. You can digitize old photos and letters to save space, and create a special memory box for the truly important keepsakes.
