Football Sunday Turkey Chili

The temps are starting to get a bit chillier as we find ourselves well into the Fall season with Winter just around the corner. I love this time of year for so many reasons, one being it is the perfect weather for curling up on the couch with a warm bowl of freshly made chili and watching a football game with my family. Whether you are a Patriots rooting family like my household, or you choose to back a team from your own hometown or school, there is always a lot of fun and shared time to be had on lazy Sunday afternoons!

I’m always so calm eating a big bowl of chili. There is something with having a big warm, yummy bowl of chili with my favorite margarita after a long ski day outside in the middle of winter.

Chili is known as a staple dish at football tailgates or fall/winter gatherings, and there are soooo many different variations.  I enjoy a healthier, turkey chili that is just slightly spicy and paired with a super delicious cornbread muffin.  The turkey chili is packed with a variety of spices and beans and will definitely fill your tummy with its hearty ingredients.  One of the best parts of this meal is it makes for great leftovers! And don’t get me started on the muffins… I could eat these as a standalone breakfast item or literally with anything, yum!  I like to pair it with my Mescal, Jalapeño Margarita with a splash of orange liqueur is such a fun twist on the classic. It’s a smokey, however if you don’t like mescal tequila, use regular to make it more level, I taste a bit of sweetness paired with smokiness and spice which makes it a refreshing cocktail, perfect for chili night sipping!

There are a variety of health benefits in a bowl of chili.  It is protein packed, containing both the meat from the ground turkey and the beans.  Even if you decide to make a vegetarian chili by leaving out the meat, the beans still provide a great source of protein.  Beans not only give you protein, but also offer you an extra source of iron that many people are lacking in their diets. In addition, the ingredients in most chilis deliver a good source of vitamin C and Fiber. What a perfect fall meal! Chili is easy to make and delicious, plus you can enjoy this meal feeling like you are fueling your body with nutritious foods.

Feel free to take these recipes and make them your own.  To elevate the chili even more, top it with cheese, avocado, tortilla chips, cilantro or sour cream.  You could even have a few friends over and make a fun chili bar for everyone to enjoy!

How to Make The Best Football Sunday Turkey Chili

This recipe is super easy, and you can either make it on the stove top or in your crock pot! Plus, if it’s chilly outside, it will warm you right up! If you are looking for the best margarita to be paired with your yummy bowl of chili, add my favorite Mescal, Jalapeño Margarita with a splash of orange liqueur! It’s so good and sometimes, you want a kick-ass margarita with your bowl of chili!

Can I Make it in the Crock Pot?

Yes! To make it in the Crock Pot, reduce the chicken broth to 1/2 cup and brown the turkey and onions before adding to the slow cooker. Cook it on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours.

Can I Use Ground Chicken or Ground Beef Instead of Ground Turkey?

Yes, ground chicken or ground beef would work in this chili recipe. If you wanted to make it vegetarian, you could just add more beans and leave out the meat completely!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil

  • 1 yellow onion, chopped

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey or chicken

  • 4 tablespoons chili powder

  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste

  • 1 (28-ounce) can dice tomatoes or crushed tomatoes

  • 1 1/4 cups chicken broth

  • 2 (15 oz) cans dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained

  • 1 (15 oz) can sweet corn, rinsed and drained

Instructions

  1. Place oil in a large pot and place over medium high heat. Add in onion, garlic and red pepper and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.

  2. Add in ground turkey and break up the meat; cooking until no longer pink. Next add in chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper and salt; stir for about 20 seconds.

  3. Next add in tomatoes, chicken broth, kidney beans and corn. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes, or until chili thickens and flavors come together. Taste and adjust seasonings and salt as necessary.

  4. Garnish with anything you'd like. Makes about 6 servings. Enjoy!
