My Review of Beautycounter's Beyond Gloss + Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick
I’m going to be honest, prior to Beautycounter I hardly ever wore lipstick and/or lip gloss. I honestly couldn’t find anything that didn’t taste like chemicals on my lips, and/or a lipstick that didn’t leave my lips even more dry than they were. Not only that, but I had NO idea just how much I was missing prior to trying my favorite Beyond Gloss and Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick. Then, I started wondering why I waited so long!
While I had a well-founded skincare routine for years, I was never a big makeup wearer until I actually found Beautycounter. I think because of how sensitive my skin is, all makeup would either bother my eyes and make them water or I’d break out. Lately, I’ve been wearing more Dew Skin since spring is here, and I like a little more glow with SPF to protect my skin from the UV rays. I’m enjoying this natural and easy look with a simple Sheer Lip Conditioner, my favorite mascara (blog post here why), and I’m ready for my day!.

I've always been serious about what put on our lips, because we are basically eating the ingredients off of our lips. No matter the effort, you ARE going to ingest some of your lip product and there is a lot of stuff in lip glosses and lipsticks on the market today, including PEGs (used as thickeners, solvents, softeners, or moisture carriers) and BHT or plasticizers. All are linked to harm in human health and have environmental impact concerns, which vary based on many factors, including route of exposure.
Beautycounter also does a thorough process for screening and testing. Each batch is tested for heavy metals to ensure they meet the BC safety measures. In addition, there are 65 cosmetic colorants allowed in the US, but Beautycounter prohibits the use of majority and only relies on 18 colorants in their cosmetics.
Supply Chain Transparency + Ingredient Spotlight: Vanilla
One of my favorite pieces that Beautycounter does is use an ECOCERT-certified organic vanilla sourced through a woman-owned supplier who partners with cooperatives and farmers in Madagascar. This lights me up! They also support local communities through initiatives like funding for clean drinking water, health care, and education.
The responsibly sourced vanilla is what makes this lip gloss smell so sweet and delicious (none of the artificial crap here, friends). And by “ethically sourced” I mean certified-organic vanilla that has been sourced from small-holder farmers in Madagascar to ensure “fair compensation, clean drinking water, and access to healthcare and education for the farmers and their families”.

Beautycounter has also chosen to begin extensive in-person audits of all of our mica suppliers. Mica is an ingredient that's widely used in cosmetics to create the shimmery glow we all know and love. But the mica industry can come with some serious transparency issues.Beautycounter also chose a domestic source that’s committed to industry-leading practices for sustainable mining and processing. For additional mica suppliers, they are working to further secure and trace their mica through our partnership with Sourcemap and on-the-ground audits. This technology platform was founded at MIT and is helping us map our entire supply chain. This gives us visibility to exactly where our mica is sourced—mine by mine, day by day.
